Before you rent

Ask whether the apartment comes furnished or unfurnished, and whether an inventory will be attached to the contract. On a gated site, the contract should say who pays the site fees. Under the Turkish Code of Obligations the deposit cannot exceed three months' rent, and a renewed lease cannot raise the rent by more than the twelve-month average of the consumer price index (TÜFE) for the previous lease year. Photographing the apartment when you move in helps avoid a dispute over the deposit when you leave.
